Spirent Communications™ Unveils Industry’s First CDMA2000 Core Wireless Network Benchmarking Application

Performance benchmarking tool extends Spirent’s reach into the growing CDMA2000 core infrastructure market.

Spirent Communications™ announced today two significant steps in its drive to capture the leading position in the core mobility test equipment market—a new product and a new partner. Spirent introduced the first carrier-scale CDMA2000 performance benchmarking tool, co-developed with Scientific Software Engineering Inc. (SSE), a leading provider of software-based telecommunications products for more than 20 years. The new CDMA2000 Performance Test System builds upon existing test tools for GPRS, WCDMA and WLAN. Spirent’s partnership with SSE will yield several new wireless core infrastructure test applications throughout 2004 and beyond.

Spirent’s CDMA2000 Performance Test System evaluates 200,000 mobile systems per test server and six million mobile systems per application. It includes all of the key emulation and performance elements for benchmarking both current and next-generation Mobile IP and Simple IP core infrastructure, including both home agents and foreign agents alone and in combination. The scalability, reliability and robustness of IP wireless applications are directly dependent upon the performance of these key devices.

“As new CDMA2000 services are rapidly being rolled out, expediting equipment testing is critical to timely service delivery,” said Dr. Shiv Bakhshi, research manager for mobile and wifi infrastructure at IDC. “A test tool like the CDMA2000 Performance Test System could shorten the testing cycle and improve time-to-market for products.”

Network Equipment Manufacturers will realize the benefits of this new test system by benchmarking systems before trial, identifying session capacity limits, measuring call set-up performance and more. Improved evaluations prior to vendor selections and identifying performance ceilings are benefits service providers can obtain from this new product.

“Service providers and equipment manufacturers can now determine categorically whether their CDMA2000 equipment can sustain a rapidly growing customer base with increasingly demanding applications,” said Mark Fishburn, vice president of technical strategy for Spirent Communications. “The CDMA2000 Performance Test System leverages Spirent’s and SSE’s combined expertise in core service provider communications technologies with true carrier-scale performance and feature tests. The application completes Spirent’s core mobile infrastructure test tool portfolio, which also includes the industry’s first carrier-scale GPRS test application and the first controlled, reproducible WLAN benchmarking system. Together, this trilogy commands the market for high-performance, large-scale core network mobile wireless network benchmarking.”

According to Frost & Sullivan, carriers will spend nearly $20 million this year on CDMA test solutions and almost $43 million annually before the end of the decade.
